The Cayman Island Golf Association (CIGA)
held it's general meeting at Double D's poolside bar in the
Grand Pavilion on Seven Mile Beach Road on Tuesday 6th
September 2005. A large group of members attended and elected
the committee for the upcoming year as follows:
President : Robert Woods
Vice President: Colin McKay
Secretary: David Bird
Treasurer: Bob Slatter
General Committee: Stephen Heal, Rory Mohammed, Matthew
Luke, Paul Woodhouse and, Judy Van-Liere
Outgoing President Richard Jones applauded
the efforts made over the difficult year by the CIGA committee;
it’s members and the National Team that competed at the
Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships in St. Kitts.
The Hoerman Cup team had finished 2 places
higher than ever before, beating both Jamaica and the Bahamas
for the first time in finishing 6th. The Mid-Am,
Senior and Ladies teams had also represented the Country well.
It was also noted that the team itself raised substantial funds
for the trip to St. Kitts and coupled with excellent practice
sessions the camaraderie between it’s players had developed to a
level that we should strive to repeat in future years.
Individually the two youngest members of the team, Johnny and
Samantha Widmer excelled with Sam finishing as the top Caribbean
Lady golfer and Johnny finishing a close second for the men.
Throughout the year, the membership had
continued to support CIGA despite having only a nine-hole course
to play on.The committee held regular well attended meetings,
organized tournaments and qualifying rounds and despite many
issues, kept CIGA in good standing.
Supported by the members, elected
President Robert Woods thanked Richard for his efforts over the
previous three years and providing the leadership we needed to
get past a rough stretch since Hurricane Ivan. He also gave
praise to outgoing committee members Wally Clark, Nicole Chin
and Tracy Moore for their contributions. He stated that he hoped
that the committee continued with its policy pushed by the
previous President in relation the transparency of its actions
and to give all members a fair chance of qualifying for the
National Team once they enter the qualifying tournament.
The Cayman Islands is due to host the
Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships in 2007, however the fact
that since Hurricane Ivan, the Cayman Islands has not had a 18
hole Golf Course, and is not sure when the Links at Safehaven
will be fully operating a decision as to whether we will be in a
position to host will have to be made by the committee in
January 2006.
The new Committee will be meeting in the
on 14th September 2005 to discuss several upcoming
tournaments, please log onto to the website in the near future,
as we will be posting details of these tournaments as the dates
are confirmed.
