2005 Island Championship

Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th June 2005 saw the 13th Cayman Islands Golf Association Amateur Championship with the final qualifying rounds for the Cayman Islands National Team.

Conditions on the Saturday were brutal with winds upwards of 40 mph and weed upwards of 40 inches the course was playable only for the toughest competitors. Fourteen year old Caymanian Johnny Widmer used his considerable length downwind and solid ball striking against the wind to card a magnificent 73. Highlights of his round included his playing the 500 + yard par five 9th and 18th holes with just a Driver, Lob Wedge and a putter! Johnny’s only real mistake was in over hitting the 362 yard 6th hole by 40 yards……from the tee!Robert Woods and Paul Wammer were the only two other players to break 80……just, both scoring 79.

In the Ladies Championship, Samantha Widmer overpowered the field with an excellent 74, whilst Robert Chilman led the seniors with an 80.

Day 2 brought little relief as the winds stayed strong and the weeds grew longer! However the scoring was massively improved. Young Johnny remained calm under a barrage of verbal banter from the ‘nasty boys’ Wammer and Riggins and despite a few wayward strokes carded a solid and safe 71. So it became a battle for second place between Robert Woods, Trent Riggins, Paul Wammer, Matt Luke and Robert Chilman. All five played solid golf but made no impression on the leader. Woods (72) and Chilman (71) tied for second place leaving Woods to be considered the Bridesmaid for the third consecutive year.

Robert Chilman again showed his class in comfortably winning the Senior Championship, whilst Samantha Widmer (77) ran away with the Ladies Championship.

Net winners were Robert Woods (A flight), Matt Luke (B flight), Frank Brennan (C Flight), Nicole Chin (Ladies flight) and Shazad Hafiz (Junior Flight). Special mention should go to Shazad Hafiz, who at 12 years of age, and in his first ‘major’ on Island Championship was the overall Net Champion with a net score of 2 over par.
